Salem Beautification Committee
Meeting September 25,, 2012
        Minutes 

Present: Marcia Lambert, Sam Fiori, Mary Ellen Halliwell, Sandra Power, Barbara Sirios?, Barbara Swartz,  Ellen Talkowsky, Judith Wolfe.   Absent: Bev Moustakis, Maryanne Piechocki, Visitors: Lisa Lyons  

Meeting was called to order at 7:40 P.M.

The Minutes of the meeting of August 28, 2012 were approved as written.

1. Lady of Salem:  Plans for the ceremony awarding the winners of the most favorite  “Lady of Salem” figure contest were discussed. The festivities will take place during the Trails and Sails event. on Saturday, September 29th, at 2:00 P.M at an outdoor site near the Friendship on Derby Street..  There will be a podium, microphone and refreshments.  In case of rain the site will be moved to the National Park Service Center. There will be posters of the “Ladies” plus a self directed route guide for viewing the figures where they are installed.  There were a total of 446 votes cast.  There will be six winners.  The First Place winner will receive a prize of $250.00. Gift  Certificates generously provided by Tavern on the Square, Scratch Kitchen, Salem Five Bank, Witch Way Gifts and the Salem Art Association will be presented to the remaining winners.   It was suggested that posters of the” Ladies” be offered for sale next year.

2. Halloween:  As in the past, the Committee will sponsor a pumpkin decorating contest with prizes for community children.  It was reported that arrangements for school students to decorate pumpkins for the contest and display have been finalized with the Bates School and the YMCA.  Other children in the community will be encouraged to submit their own decorated pumpkins for the contest.  The decorated pumpkins are to be delivered to a open sided display trailer located on the Salem Common on Friday October 12th after 4:00 P.M. and on Saturday.  Beautification Committee members will be available at the trailers to accept the pumpkins, register the artists and display the pumpkins on the shelves provided.  The judging is scheduled for Sunday, October 14th at 11:00A.M.  Details regarding art supplies, manning the trailer logistics and advertising were considered.

3.  Traffic Islands:  The Winners of the Traffic Island competition were acknowledged.  The sponsoring organizations are:
        First Place –            Salem Car Wash and Stanetsky Memorial Chapel
        Second Place –          Rose Insurance Agency
        Third Place -                   Salem Notary

        New Entry Winner –      The Chimney Company
        Honorable Mentions  -   The Feline Hospital, Home Depot, Salem Community Gardens and                                     Shirley        Cervoni Walkway

It was reported that the sponsors of various neglected traffic Islands have been contacted with suggestions.  The cleanup of the “Pedestrian Mall  was noted.  The Military Island has acquired 30 flags. The island is a tribute to active duty military personnel.

4.  Future Plans and Projects:  The Committee began to identify public places that might benefit from some attention.  .   It was suggested among other things that the Pumpkin decorating project might be expanded to include pumpkins decorated by Adults.  Discussion is to be continued.
